Apex Cable TV is here to provide you with information about cable television or CATV (the abbreviation for cable TV).

We explain in lay mans terms what cable TV is, and all about the components for CATV and anything that goes along with it. We also provide links to cable providers offering their latest cable deals.

Cable television can be confusing to a lay person and those of us less technically minded people. Yet having fixed optical fibre or coaxial cables can provide you with FM radio programming, high speed Internet, cable telephony, non-television services as well as your cable television. So it is worthwhile to have an understanding of what cabling is all about.

The combination of TV, telephone and Internet access is commonly called triple play whether it is offered by telco’s or cable TV providers.

Cable TV is commonplace in some countries like the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and East Asia. It is present in parts of other countries like South America and the Middle East. Although in countries like Africa due to sparsely populated areas it is not cost-effective to lay cables.

Access to a cable network requires that cables are laid and maintained right through to your property. Although in some places cable connections are commonplace, other places only offer a limited cable service.

Laying and maintaining cables comes at some cost and it is not feasible for all the companies to lay cables to every property. This tends to create a natural monopoly situation in many circumstances. Competition to this is likely to be in the form of terrestrial or satellite providers.

cable tv packages vary from region to region and provider to provider. The rates do change and you really need an understanding of what you are paying for which can sometimes be a challenge.

So bookmark Apex Cable TV now as we help bring you cable deals and provide you with information for a greater understanding of cable electronics.

I have a Panasonic DMR-ES15 DVD recorder with an NTSC CATV tuner. What does that mean and can it receive and process over the air HDTV broadcasts? Thanks!

The NTSC CATV tuner allows you to program your dvd recorder like a tv or vcr in the USA….so your can record your programs The only way it can process over HDTV or record HD programming is that you must have an HD Digital Box. Hope this helps

Do cable tv providers monitor what customers watch? Do they track the popular and frequently viewed stations?

I’d like to know if they feed info back to advertisers or producers on what people watch, for how long, and with what frequency.

I do not believe they do. Normally they use Neilsen Ratings. Nielsen Television Ratings statistics are gathered in two ways: one is by extensive use of surveys, where viewers in various demographics are asked to keep a written record (called a diary) of what shows they watch at what times. The other is by the use of a limited number of Nielsen Boxes, which are small computers hooked up to a television in a home, which electronically records its activities and transmits them nightly to Nielsen.

These Nielsen Boxes allow market researchers to study television viewing habits on a minute to minute basis, seeing at exactly what moment a viewer changed channels or turned off their TV. Additional use of direct reporting devices (called people meters) allow the company to gather overnight statistics in specific geographic areas.

My elderly dad received a black device from Comcast yesterday. His house receives analog cable (A cable goes in the house and plugs directly to the tv set). He gets regular cable programming like CNN, ESPN, etc.

I checked the black box and it says it is a CATV converter. Does he have to pay monthly fees to use that device? Also I’m hearing about the digital transition coming in 2009. All TV without “set top box” won’t be able to watch analog signals. Is the box that my dad received also a “set-top” box?

I THINK IT IS

What’s the best CATV cable to use?

I live in an apartment where the master bedroom and the living room are the only outlets for Coax. I want to run my computer in the guest bedroom which is around 30-40 feet away. I am concerned about sacrificing speed because of the distance. I see so many prices online for different cables. Does it matter which Coax cable I use? If so, what is the best one to pick that will give me the speeds as if the computer was in the Master BR instead of the guest?

You can run an ethernet connection 100 meters before you need a repeater. That is a lot of coax! Just use a good quality coax, RG59 or RG6 and use a product called “Belfoil”. It means that the cable is 100% shielded. Belfoil is a trade mark of Belden Cable.

Which cable TV provider offers the best deal?

We have a very limited budget for cable TV. Which provider/plan is the cheapest to get? We want a very limited plan, cable TV only with basic channels like ESPN, Disney, Discovery, History. I guess you can tell that I don’t know much about the subject, but any and all help is greatly appreciated.

First, it will depend on what providers are available in your area (comcast, verizon, rcn, etc). Once you determine who offers this service check their web sites for their current deals. There is tremendous competion for customers and you should be able to find a suitable deal in your area.

Keep in mind some of the channels you are looking for are only available in the higher tier price range so you will need to decide how much you want to spend. My comcast plan just jumped $32.00 and when I called about it they told me I had just come off of some 12 month special pricing. When I suggested I might jump to verizon they upped my package to include all of the premium stations for $7.00 more a month. Don’t be afraid to haggle.
