The cable/satellite providers say that it’s because nobody would pay for some of the smaller channels, so they would cost too much. They admit that the popular channels subsidize the less popular ones. In my case, the 20 dozen sports channels keep down the cost of all the History channels. Additionally, if they charged per channel it would actually cost more money. They also claim that their equipment would have problems keeping track of hundreds of millions of different configurations. But this is why they offer cable boxes etc that are programmable – you tell them not to display channels that don’t interest you.

the whole idea is you have all the channels going and just use the ones you want to see. You can eliminate movies and sport if you wish, and decide whether you want any premium channels, porn etc. but unless you only want to use the freeview selection well thats the way it is...
